People visit the Umayyad Mosque at dusk. The mosque is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world and it sits in the heart of the ancient city of Damascus in Syria. The mosque has a shrine dedicated to John the Baptist, Prophet Yahia to Muslims. It is believed that John’s head is buried. People pray and weep at the shrine, wiping clothing on it, and some even tie green ribbons on it. In the late fourth century, a church dedicated to John the Baptist was built in place of a massive temple to Jupiter that was built by the Romans in the first century A.D.
