The Hong Kong waterfront has changed dramatically since Baptist missionaries J. Lewis and Henrietta Hall Shuck began work there in 1836. They and coworkers in 1842 organized what is recognized as the first Baptist church in China. Henrietta was buried in Hong Kong in 1844, and Lewis moved farther into China when the mainland opened to missionaries in 1845. He affiliated with the new Southern Baptist Convention in 1846.
