Swahili-Speaking Arabs of East Africa

(swah-HEE-lee) – Fatoom feels alone even though she lives on a family compound. Many years ago, she left her home in the Middle East to marry her cousin in East Africa. Like many other women who emigrated from the Middle East, she speaks Arabic. The rest of the family speaks Swahili. This has made it difficult for her to develop close relationships with her other cousins and aunts who live in her building. She always feels on the outside of things, as she doesn’t understand their gossiping and doesn’t feel comfortable exploring the city on her own. She is raising a beautiful family but dearly misses her siblings and her father who remain in the Middle East. Fatoom has a sweet friendship with a believing woman who has shared with her not only the gospel, but also her life. Pray that the seeds that have been planted by this believing woman will take root and that Fatoom will become more curious about the Savior who promises to never leave her nor forsake her (Hebrews 13:5).
