In memoriam: Missionary emeritus Mattie Lou Bible, 1929-2023

Mattie Lou Bible, an International Mission Board missionary emeritus who shared the gospel in Brazil, died Nov. 11, 2023, in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was 94.

Mattie was born March 23, 1929, in Haughton, Louisiana, to Libeus and Jewel Bible. She graduated from Haughton High School and received the Bachelor of Arts from Louisiana College, Pineville, Louisiana, and the Master of Religious Education from Carver School of Missions and Social Work in Louisville, Kentucky.

In the summer of 1951, she served as a student missionary in Frankfort, Illinois, with the Home Mission Board (now North American Mission Board). Before her appointment as a missionary with the Foreign Mission Board (now International Mission Board), she served as the educational secretary at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia, and the educational and youth activities director at First Baptist Church in Kannapolis, North Carolina. After being cleared for missionary service, living with a functional heart murmur, she followed the Lord’s leading to the mission field.

The International Mission Board appointed Mattie a missionary to Brazil. She served there nearly 40 years. During her time in Brazil, she served as president and teacher at Minas Gerais Baptist Theological Seminary. She worked extensively with college students.

She is survived by her sister, Nell Copes, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Nov. 24, 2023, at First Baptist Church Shreveport, Louisiana.
